Mac’s drive space freeing up in five different ways

Everyone can use some free space in his or her drive for some other usage. However, not everyone is acquainted with simple steps of doing so. Below given are 5 simple steps of freeing up drive space.

1. Downloads clearing out

Each time a user views PDF file or photo in Apple’s Mail email message, that file automatically is saved on Mail Downloads. In case user gets few attachments then mail downloads folder also remains small. However, in case one is a common file exchanger, hundreds megabytes are siphoned away from drive. Maximum of this megabyte is wasted on already saved files. As a relief to this problem, emptying this particular folder is very easy after knowing residing place of these files. All one needs to do is choose “Go” as well as “Go to Folder” in finder. Next step is to paste as well as type Library and Mail Downloads. Next, select each of folder’s content and move it to Trash.

In same line, high probability is of fact that one has downloaded stuff bunch from Web that is not required anymore. All these files can be found in folder of Main downloads. This folder is very much easy to locate. This folder is in home folder just for purpose of easy cleaning up. In case, one has not saved all their downloads of web somewhere else then this system gives user an opportunity to go over all these downloads and make sure that nothing important is being deleted. - Serenity Caldwell

2. Unused versions of video deletion

In case, one purchases movie‘re high-definition version from store of iTunes then automatically that title’s two versions downloaded. These two versions are standard-definition version and HD version.  Standard-definition version gets downloaded for helping devices, which do not run HD videos. From March 2012, regardless of HD version’s 720p and 1080p resolution, 1080p video availability depends on iTunes settings. That translates to fact that for download of two-hour long Hugo movie, 6-7 GB whopping drive space is used. That translates roughly to 1.9 GB SD version and 4.3-5.2 GB for HD version. Same way, if one goes for TV shows HD 720p version i.e. 45-minute long episode, then it would need 2.2GB space. That again translates roughly to HD 720p version of 1.5 GB and SD version of 650MB.

If a user does not necessarily watch both video versions then lots of space can be saved of iTunes library via deleting either SD or HD version.
In cases of TV shows, one has to first opt for iTunes list of TV shows and after that find ones having HD/SD icon on right side of name of episode. Select a single episode and select File and “Show In finder”. One can also press Shift+R for it. Next, delete version that is not wanted. Repeatedly, do it for every episode. In case, re-downloading of these episodes deleted version is needed then navigate on purchased screen of iTunes Store and click on TV shows. Find appropriate episode their and click on button of Download.

In cases of movies, select iTunes movies list and repeat same process. However, there is a warning associated with it. One cannot re-download Universal and Fox movies currently because of issues of licensing. Until one has backup somewhere, Universal or Fox movie version once deleted cannot be recovered. - Dan Frakes.

3. Music matching

Over years media libraries of iTunes have been swelling greatly. Help of Apple’s iTunes can easily save disk’s bundle space. One can store their music on server of Apple in cloud by subscription of iTunes Match. At same time, streaming of same music on Mac and iOS configured devices on same account.

Local music tracks as well as copies can be banished to Trash easily via music library matching process. This all however should be backed somewhere else. One has to simply opt all tracks for removal and then delete them. After that, iTunes will ask for permission whether user wishes to delete files. If one clicks on “Move To Trash” then drive will be emptied but files will live somewhere in library. During trips, if one wants particular song’s local copies then user will not have to access Internet again. It can be re-downloaded with click.

Service of iTunes Match costs 25 dollars a year. However, it is a meager price for getting some free space in disk without music loss. - Dan Moren

4. Sync Dropbox selection

Like Macworld staff, many people keep data as well as documents synchronized in all Macs with help of free service of Dropbox. Many even try hard for up-gradation of Dropbox for 2.0 GB storage increase by free account. Not needed Dropbox-synced files however are drive space’s wastage. It also siphons away large battery life in case Dropbox synchronizes changes on unnecessary files during a trip.

For excluding some files from coordinating with laptop, on can click on icon of “Dropbox” placed on menu bar. From it, they can choose preferences. Next click on “Advanced” tab on resulting window and next on “Change Settings” placed besides Selective Sync. Here, user will be able to see Dropbox folder’s contents on file browser. For preventing entire folder from synchronizing, uncheck it. In case, user wants a subfolder from synchronizing, open a folder’s contents and uncheck that subfolder. Next step is to click on “Update” tab. By this click, Dropbox asks for unchecked folders synchronizing prevention confirmation. This prevention will also remove all these files from computer. However, they will remain on computer Dropbox’s servers. For confirmation, click Update tab.

5. iOs old cruft removal

ITunes senses patterns when user syncs iPod, iPad or iPhone touch to Mac. It most probably still is prone to OS updates and device old backups. This in turn, uses drive’s huge space.

For navigating launch iTunes and old backups, click on iTunes, Preference and window toolbar’s Devices icon. Here one gets a view of iOS synced devices various backups with date of their creation. In each device, there are multiple versions of it. Not all backups here need to be deleted. However, if iOS device is working properly then older backups removal will not do any harm.

For doing this, a person needs to choose particular backup and click on “Delete Backup button”. For multiple backup’s selection, one needs to click all of them. Once confirmed, iTunes will delete all unnecessary backups. It thus gets user plenty of freed-up space. In iPhone 4S, each local backups weighs around 4GB.

During disk space reclaiming that was earlier of behind-scenes data of iTunes, one files set removal can help too. These are updates of iPod software and old iOS. These updates are saved by iTunes downloads for installation. However, it does not remove them even after installation. Deleting them would get user loads of free space. If one needs them later on then they can re-download them from iTunes. At finder, click on “Go” and “Go to folder”. Here type or paste “~/Library/iTunes”. In here, now look for updates folders of iPad Software, iPod Software and iPhone Software. For getting few drive space’s gigabytes, delete anything unwanted here. Just removing one iPhone update and two of iPad updates gives around 2.4GB free space. - Lex Friedman

Through all this procedure data information from old Mac to new Mac becomes relatively easy and all one needs is a same network.
