Book collection can either be just for a hobby or on a more serious level.
Some book lovers, called the bibliophiles, collect books as a hobby, just to make up their own personal library. But some others are serious collectors of books and they are more interested in the books and not their content. The collectors sometimes look for books on a particular topic or all books from a particular author, and even based on the edition of the books.
Collection of books is actually a very easy process, because there are millions of books available all over the world, and also a large number of stores where you can search for the book you need. Today there are virtual book stores via internet also. All sorts of works are in demand in the market, including the old manuscripts of certain books, which are way expensive compared to selecting books based on an author or topic. The books printed in the 15th century (incunabula) are also available in the book stores today. These books may be priced several hundred dollars, while the century old books cost less than 10 dollars or so. Some of the great and rarely found books that a collector would want to have in his collection are the Shakespeare’s First Folio, The Guttenberg Bible etc. These can be very expensive too. Some of the most unusual items among the book world include the book of squares of Native Textiles brought by Captain Cook when he came back from the South Seas. If you are an average collector, the better method of collecting would be to get the first editions of the books of any modern author. |
