Glossary

watch collectionThe Manual Movement: The watches which use manual movements are powered by the energy released by the tensile force on the main spring, when the winding of the watch is done. This energy is slowly released, and it causes the gears to move at a certain frequency. The gears are in turn, linked to the hands of the watch, and thus the hands show the current time on an analog display. Such watches require to be wound again manually, so that the spring will power up to the maximum possible tension. The length of the spring determines the energy that can be stored in it. If length is more, the spring can store more energy and hence the watch would have more time before it needs to be wound again. Such watches can stay up to 36 hours without getting wound.

The Automatic Movement: The movement is almost like the Manual or Mechanical movement. The only difference is that here, there is a weight added to the movement. This weight is called the rotor. It is a free weight and it oscillates around the movement of the watch. The rotor moves when the watch moves, normally because of the wearer moving his wrist. This rotor provides power to the spring of the watch, and thus automatically winds it. So, if the watch is worn every two days, it can go on without having to wind it manually.

The Chronograph: It is used for timing events without affecting the main timekeeping. There is a button to reset the chronograph for further use.

Flyback Chronograph: This has a single button so as to start the chronograph stop it or rest it.

Rattrapante or the Split Second Chronograph: This is a double chronograph which can be used to time two events together, provided both the events start simultaneously.

The Power Reserve Display: This is used to show how much power is left in the spring of the watch.

Tourbillon: This was an invention of the 18th century. It mounts the escapement and the balance wheel into a cage that is rotating, and it helps to counter the gravitational effects. This negates the gravitational effect when the escapement rotates with the rotation of the time piece.

The Triple or Moonphase Calendar: This is actually used as a decorative part. It shows the phases of the moon in the month. There is a display, which shows the date, day and the month.

The Perpetual Calendar: This is one which displays the year, month and the day. Some watches automatically change the date during the February month, when the number of days is less. Some others have the facility to incorporate the leap years in their mechanism and this avoids the need to change the date day etc in February manually.

The Skeleton: This is usually found in watches that are manually wound. In such watches the decorated parts of the watch are visible from the front or back or even both.

The GMT: This is the Greenwich Mean Time and it is a watch that can show the time in a 24 hour display.

The Perlage: It is also called the Circular Graining and it is a surface decoration used for watches. It consists of an even pattern of dots that partially overlap each other. These are applied on the watch with a rapidly rotating wooden peg or plastic peg.

The Geneva Stripes: These are beautiful patterns on the movement of the watch and they are usually made on the bridge with rose engine lathe. They are also called Cotes de Geneve.

The Crystal: This refers to the glass which covers the front side and the backside of the watch. The materials usually used are sapphire, which has the largest scratch resisting capability, minerals or plastic. The inner portion of it is coated with an anti-reflective substance. Sometimes, both the inner and outer sides are coated, making the crystal doubly coated to prevent any kind of reflection.
